Jayne and I travelled down to the Car hire company near Malaga Airport where Jayne dropped me off to start a week long tour and continued on to do some shopping. I collected a minibus and then met Mike Langley at a nearby hotel before having a look at a reed filled channel right on the Northern end of the Runway just out side the Airport fence. We parked and walked along the Southern bank and started the trip list off with Zitting Cisticola (Buitrón / Cisticola juncidis), Nightingale (Ruisenor Común / Luscinia megarhynchos), Cetti's (Ruisenor Bastardo / Cettia cetti), Reed (Carricero Común / Acrocephalus scrpaceus) and Sardinian Warblers (Curruca Cabecinegra / Sylvia melanocephala), Common Stonechat (Tarabilla Común / Saxicola torquata), Goldfinch (Jilguero / Carduelis carduelis), Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Carduelis chloris), Linnet (Pardillo Común / Carduelis cannabina), Serin (Verdecillo / Serinus serinus), Purple Swamp-hen (Calamon Común / Porphyrio porphyrio), Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), Monk Parakeet (Cotorra Argentina / Myiopsitta monachus), Little (Garceta Común / Egreeta garzetta) and Cattle Egrets (Garcilla Bueyera / Bubulcus ibis), Night Heron (Marinete Común / Nycticorax nycticorax), Feral Pigeon (Paloma Bravía / Columba livia), Collared (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto) and Turtle Doves (Tórtola Europea / Streptopelia turtur), House Martin (Avión Común / Delichon urbica) and Common Swifts (Vencejo Común / Apus apus). We got to the van and headed up the motorway calling in at the area that used to be Laguna de Herrera but now drained by the farmers, we did how ever find Lesser Kestrel (Cernicola Primilla / Falco naumanni), Corn Bunting (Triguero / Emberiza calandra), Calandra (Calandria / Melanocorypha calandra) and Short-toed Larks (Terrera Común / Calandrella brachydactyla), Yellow Wagtail (Lavandera Boyera / Motacilla flava iberiae), Raven (Cuervo / Corvus corax) and Iberian / Southern Grey Shrike (Alcaudón Real Meridional / Lanius meridionalis). After checking the fields we drove a track which followed one of the larger drainage channels and added Great Reed Warbler (Carricero Tordal / Acrocephalus arundinaceus), Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo), Marsh Harrier (Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental / Circus aeruginosus), Pallid Swift (Vencejo Pálido /Apus pallidus) as well as Clouded Yellow (Colias Común / Colias corcea) and Large White (Pieris brassicae).

Again we continued on along the A92 but only as far as Fuente de Piedra, we stopped at the side of the entrance road pool and immediatly picked up a stunning adult summer plumaged White-winged (Black) Tern (Fumarel Aliblanco / Chlidonias leucopterus) which was feeding along with a winter plumaged Whiskered Tern (Fumarel Cariblanca / Chilidonias hybridus). On the same pool we had Curlew Sandpipers (Correlimos Zarapitin / Calidris ferruginea) x14, Common Sandpiper (Andarrios Chico / Actitis hypoleucos) x3, Black-winged Stilt (Ciguenela Común / Himantopus himantopus), Avocet (Avoceta Común / Recurvirostra avosetta) x4, Little Stint (Correlimos Menudo / Calidris minuta) x5, Ringed Plover (Chorlitejo Grande / Charadrius hiaticula) x2, Ruff (Combatiente / Philomachus pugnax) x5, Black-tailed Godwit (Aguja Colinegra / Limosa limosa) x1, Bar-tailed Godwit (Aguja Colipinta / Limosa lapponica) x3, Glossy Ibis (Morito Común / Plegadis falcinellus) x2, Greater Flamingo (Flamenco Común / Phoenicopterus roseus), Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra) and Gadwall (Anade Friso / Anas strepera).

A day on the Marshes between El Rocio and Matalascañas in the Donana.
Day two, Donana and Extremadura tour.
After a very nice breakfast we all met up out at the van and whilst we were waiting there some of the group started the day list off with House Sparrow (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus), Hoopoe (Abubilla / Upupa epops), Common Cuckoo (Cuco Común / Cuculus canorus), Red-rumped (Golondrina Dáurica / Hirudo daurica) and Barn Swallows (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica), House Martin (Avión Común / Delichon urbica), Common Swift (Vencejo Común / Apus apus), Booted Eagle (Aguililla Calzada / Hieraaetus pennatus), Nightingale (Ruisenor Común / Luscinia megarhynchos), Collared Dove (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto), Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus), Great Tit (Carbonera Común / Parus major), Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo) and just little way down the road a very nice group of White Storks (Ciguena Blanca / Ciconia ciconia) nesting in some roadside trees.
We made our way across to the well known town of El Rocio on the edge of the Charco de la Boca, a large expance of water to the south of the town and parked there. We walked along the promanard type walkway which follows the dge of the water a soon started to find some interesting species including Greater Flamingo's (Flamenco Común / Phoenicopterus roseus), lots of Glossy Ibis (Morito Común / Plegadis falcinellus) which were flying in continually going to the large colony at the far end of the lake, Spoonbill (Espátula Común / Platalea leucorodia), Greylag Geese (Ansar Común / Anser anser), Eurasian Coot (Focha Común / Fulica atra), Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), Red-crested (Pato Colorado / Netta rufina) and Common Pochards (Porrón Común / Aythya ferina), Gadwall (Anade Friso / Anas strepera), a very smart male Northern Pintail (Ánade Rabudo / Anas acuta) which Linda picked out, Little (Garceta Común / Egreeta garzetta), Cattle (Garcilla Bueyera / Bubulcus ibis) and Great White Egrets (Garceta Grande / Egretta alba) all of which were seen in flight over the water, Black-winged Stilts (Ciguenela Común / Himantopus himantopus) and a flock of Black-tailed Godwits (Aguja Colinegra / Limosa limosa) which eventually dropped in to the grassy islands in the centre of the marsh. Our next stop was down the main road to the coast at the Acebuches visitor centre but water levels were disappointingly low as ofter is the case in the Donana these days but we extended the list during the walk around the three hides with Iberian / Azure-winged Magpie (Rabilargo / Cyanopica cyanus), Bonelli's Warbler (Mosquitero Papialbo / Phylloscopus bonelli), Common Stonechat (Tarabilla Común / Saxicola torquata), a group of heard only Crested Tits (Herrerillo Capuchino / Parus cristatus), Corn Bunting (Triguero / Emberiza calandra), Raven (Cuervo / Corvus corax), Little Grebe (Zampullín Común / Tachybaptus ruficollis), Tree Sparrow (Gorrión Molinero / Passer montanus), a fine lookng male Pied Flycatcher (Papamoscas Cerrojillo / Ficedula hypoleuca), Orphean (Curruca Mirlano / Sylvia hortensis), Melodious (Zarcero Común / Hippolais polyglotta) and Sardinian Warblers (Curruca Cabecinegra / Sylvia melanocephala), Short-toed Treecreeper (Agateador Común / Certhia brachydactyla), Woodchat Shrike (Alcaudón Común / Lanius senator) as well as Bath White (Blanqiverdosa / Pontia daplidice) and Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui).

By now it was getting on so we dropped down to the coast and had some lunch in a bar on the eastern side of Matalascañas before having a look at a rather packed beach where Pam, John and Judy went for a paddle while the rest of us scanned the sea picking up 3+ Sandwich (Charrán Patinegro / Sterna sandvicensis) and 5 less expected Caspian Terns (Pagaza Piquiroja / Sterna caspia) and lots of Pallid Swift (Vencejo Pálido /Apus pallidus) which screemed continually over head.
We retraced our steps back up towards El Rocio and the checked the board walks out at Acebrón Centre but there were quite a few people about so we went down to the area of open water nearby and scanned the reedbeds from the track. Straight away we had nice views of a couple of Squacco Herons, a Purple Heron (Garza Imperial / Ardea purpurea) in flight, Cetti's Warbler (Ruisenor Bastardo / Cettia cetti), Purple Swamp-hen (Calamon Común / Porphyrio porphyrio) and best of all a singing Savi's Warbler (Buscarla Unicolor / Locustella luscinoides) which showed well in a clump of Rushes reasonably close. In the same area we had Yellow Lupin (Lupinus luteus), Royal Fern (Osmunda regalis), Lesser-snapdragon (Misopates orontium) a Greenshank (Archibebe Claro / Tringa nebularia), Common Chaffinch (Pinzón Vulgar / Fringilla coelebs), Black-necked Grebe (Zampullín Cullinegro / Podiceps nigricollis), Long-tailed (Mito / Aegithalos caudatus) and Coal Tits (Carbonero Garrapinos / Parus ater), Large Psammodromus (Lagartija colilarga / Psammodromus algirus), Perez's Frog (Rana Común / Pelophylax perezi) and Carpentor Bee (Xylocopa violacea).
Once we returned to the car we drove just down the road and did the loop woodland walk around the Palicio de Acebron where we saw or heard Wren (Chochin / Troglodytes troglodytes), Spotted Flycatcher (Papamoscas Gris / Muscicapa striata), Green Woodpecker (Pito Real / Picus viridis), 3 Common Waxbill (Estrilda Ondulada / Estrilda astrild) and then just as we were about to reach Mike Harvey came up and said that he had just had the main target bird for this site a Lesser-spotted Woodpecker (Dryobates minor) but by the time we returned to where he had seen it it had gone. We did find a couple of Iberian Blue-tails (Ischnura graellsii) before we returned to the car and then made our way back to the hotel. We had our evening meal and retiered after a tyering day.

We started a little before breakfast and heard a calling Tawny Owl (Cárabo Común / Strix aluco) and a Common Cuckoo (Cuco Común / Cuculus canorus) which was calling from the top of a dead tree nearby. After breakfast we checked the area around the car park and contiued the day list with House Sparrow (Gorrión Común / Passer domesticus), Iberian / Azure-winged Magpie (Rabilargo / Cyanopica cyanus), Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos), Hoopoe (Abubilla / Upupa epops), Collared (Tórtola Turca / Streptopelia decaocto) and Turtle Doves (Tórtola Europea / Streptopelia turtur), Common Swift (Vencejo Común / Apus apus), Common Waxbill (Estrilda Ondulada / Estrilda astrild), Nightingale (Ruisenor Común / Luscinia megarhynchos), House Martin (Avión Común / Delichon urbica), Red-rumped (Golondrina Dáurica / Hirudo daurica) and Barn Swallows (Golondrina Común / Hirundo rustica) and the continually present Black Kites (Milano Negro / Milvus migrans).

Just down the road we stopped along side a much larger lake at a couple of points and got the scopes out and found Greater Flamingo's (Flamenco Común / Phoenicopterus roseus), Red-crested (Pato Colorado / Netta rufina) and Common Pochards (Porrón Común / Aythya ferina), Northern Shoveler (Pato Cuchara / Anas clypeata), Spoonbills, Gadwall (Anade Friso / Anas strepera), Black-necked (Zampullín Cullinegro / Podiceps nigricollis), Little (Zampullín Común / Tachybaptus ruficollis) and Great Crested Grebes, Mallard, Eurasian Coot and Red-knobbed Coots (Focha cornuda / Fulca cristata), Common Moorhen (Gallineta Común / Gallinulas chloropus), Purple Swamp-hen, a couple of fly over Collared Pratincoles (Canastera Común / Glareola pratincola), Great Reed (Carricero Tordal / Acrocephalus arundinaceus) and more Western Olivaceous Warblers, Common Swift, loads of Black Kites and a fine male Black-headed Weaver (Ploceus melanocephalus) which was sat near three of their pendulous nests in the Tamarisk bushes.
We moved on along the road and had lunch before return back along the same road making a quick stop at the lake again at a spot where there had been a couple of other vehicle loads of birds on the way up. Here we saw all the species we had seen earlier but this time we had very close views of a nice Red-knobbed Coot.

Once we were all aboard the van we headed a short way East to the start of a drive along the El Corredor Verde, right at the start we had a walk in amongst the Stone Pine woods and found Serin (Verdecillo / Serinus serinus), Green Woodpecker (Pito Real / Picus viridis), Sardinian (Curruca Cabecinegra / Sylvia melanocephala) and Orphean Warblers (Curruca Mirlano / Sylvia hortensis), European Bee-eater (Abejaruco Común / Merops apiaster), Great Tit (Carbonera Común / Parus major), Tree Sparrow (Gorrión Molinero / Passer montanus), Greenfinch (Verderón Común / Carduelis chloris), Goldfinch (Jilguero / Carduelis carduelis), Common Buzzard (Busardo Ratonero / Buteo buteo), Woodpigeon (Paloma Torcaz / Columba palumbus) and Spotted Flycatcher (Papamoscas Gris / Muscicapa striata) and Mike Harvey then pulled another one out of the bag when he showed us a nice photograph of a Green-Striped White (Euchloe belemia) he had just seen.
