The Butterflies.

The Butterflies of this area are just outstanding with some species seen here in all months of the year but the hotter summer months are the best with some days in June, July and August producing over 50 species.
There are quite a few species / subsp found in the local sierra’s which are endemic to this part of Spain including the rare Nevada Blue (Plebicula golgus subsp golgus), Apollo (Parnassius apollo subsp nevadensis), Nevada Grayling (Pseudochazara hippolyte) and others that are just found here and in a few other localities including Spanish Brassy Ringlet (Erebia hispania), Panoptes Blue (Pseudophilotes panoptes) and Spanish Fritillary (Eurodryas desfontainii).

Other rare and difficult to locate species are found in the area including Escher’s  (Agrodiaetus escheri), Mother of Pearl (Plebicula nivescens) and Lorquin's Blues (Cupido lorquinii), Great Banded Grayling (Kanetisa circe), Lesser Spotted (Melitaea trivia) and Niobe Fritillaries (Argynnis niobe), Purple-shot Copper (Lycaena alciphron subsp gordius), Spanish Purple Hairstreak (Laeosopis roboris) and Mediterranean Skipper (Gegenes nostrodamus). Along with the more uncommon species come a multitude of more regular Butterflies, some of the more interesting ones include High-brown Fritillary (Argynnis adippe), African Grass (Niña esmaltada / Zizeeia knysna), Lang's Short-tailed (Leptotes pirithous), Silver-studded (Plebejus argus hypochionus) and Spanish Chalk-hill Blues (Lysandra albicans), Cleopatra (Cleopatra / Gonepteryx cleopatra), Dusky Heath (Ninfa de Esper / Coenonympha dorus), Iberian (Melanargia lachesis) and Spanish Marbled Whites (Melanargia ines), Mountain Argus (Aricia artaxerxer montensis), Moroccan Orange Tip (Anthocharis belia), Provencal Hairstreak (Tomares ballus) and Tree Grayling (Neohipparchia statilinus).
