13th April: Venta del Raya to Zafarraya road, Granada Province.
Today starts at Venta San Rafael just on the southern side of Venta del Raya on the road between the A92 and Zafarraya at 10:00. It will be a car share morning as we will visit several sites between the bar and the disused railway line at Ventas de Zafarraya. The first stop will be on the roadside looking for Montagu's Harrier, Azure-winged Magpie, Turtle Dove and Zitting Cisticola. We will then call at three spots in the oak woodlands that line the road where we will be looking for orchids, wild flowers, birds and butterflies. Our last stop will be at the disused railway line just outside Ventas de Zafarraya where we will again be looking for birds, wild flowers and butterflies.
Some of the species I would hope to see include: Montagu's Harrier, Griffon Vulture, Cirl Bunting, Subalpine Warbler, Woodlark, Southern and Woodchat Shrikes, Black Wheatear, Blue Rock Thrush, Alpine, Pallid and Common Swifts, Red-rumped Swallow, Rock Bunting, Rock Sparrow, Orphean Warbler, European Bee-eater, Golden Oriole, Crested Lark, Little Owl and many more.
Giant, Conical, Southern Early Purple, Italian Man, Lange's, Lizard, Fan-lipped, Sawfly, Mirror, Pink Butterfly, Giant, Small Woodcock, Small Tongue, Yellow Bee, Somber Bee and Sword-leaved Helleborine.
Moroccan Orange-tip, Clouded Yellow, Bath White, Spanish Marbled White, Lorquin's Blue, Common Blue, Meadow Brown, Small Heath, Spanish Festoon and if the sun shine lots more.
